KAWS Exposed
Publications > KAWS Exposed
Published as a collaboration between the gallery at ARO.space and Colette in Paris to accompany shows in Seattle and Paris. The book features KAWS's early work from the 1990s — his appropriation and intervention of advertising material, cleverly reworked with variations of his hallmark skull and crossbones.
KAWS’ work consists of found commercial advertisements(billboards, bus stop ads, and subway placards) which he carefully removes from their fixtures and smuggles back to his studio. There he swiftly embellishes these with his handpainted tags, personalizing and recontextualizing the advertising messages before returning them to their original locations, on the street, for public viewing.
Limited edition of 2000 copies.
Released 1999.
